Abstract

So far, the digital transformation has mainly been studied from a top-down perspective. Companies are expected to develop strategies for digital transformation, implement accordingly, and ensure its adoption within the employee base. We argue in our paper that this perspective is insufficient to give an appropriate account of the digital transformation, as complementary bottom-up approaches of active user involvement become more important in this context as well. We perform a comparative case study on three different projects in the context of the digital transformation which all included user participation and identify changes in the structural determinants of innovation activities in the transition from functional guidance to the overall enablement of collaboration.
