Customer participation has proven to be quite useful in many innovation activities, but it has not received a lot of attention in the context of business model innovation. Concepts of value co-creation, however, suggest that customers can give valuable input for business models, not only where their own role as customers is concerned, but elsewhere, too. This paper looks at contributions to business model innovation in an open innovation laboratory in Germany. The results indicate that customers can indeed provide ideas and solutions for all different kinds of aspects regarding business models, independently from the specific customer perspective on the interaction with the firm. While this cannot be generalized to every form of open innovation, it shows that there is unused potential for business model innovation in open laboratories that can further be exploited.
